Grind Guide

Every bag of Rock Fuel Coffee is roasted to order and ground fresh, so picking the right grind matters just as much as picking the right roast. Here is a quick guide to our four grind options and the brew methods each one is built for.

Whole Bean

The freshest option we offer. Grinding your coffee right before you brew locks in aroma and flavor, so if you own a burr grinder at home, this is the way to go. Whole bean works with any brew method — just grind it to match your machine.

Drip / Automatic

A medium grind sized for standard drip coffee makers and automatic brewers, including most single-serve machines. This is our most popular grind and a safe default if you are not sure what your setup needs.

Espresso

A fine, consistent grind built for espresso machines and moka pots, where water moves through the grounds quickly under pressure. Too coarse a grind here leaves a shot thin and sour, so we dial this one in fine.

Coarse

A chunky grind made for methods with longer steep times, like French press, cold brew, and percolators. The larger particles keep the brew from turning bitter or over-extracted during extended contact with water.

Still not sure?

When in doubt, choose Whole Bean and grind fresh at home, or pick Drip / Automatic if you are brewing with a standard coffee maker. Browse our full coffee selection or reach out through our Contact page if you would like a recommendation for your specific brewer.
